Making Silage - June 2007

Silage Cutting
Cutting silage

Our grass silage was cut during the third week of June.  We were fortunate to catch a very short break in the wet season.  By the following week, the field was standing with lakes of water!

Local contractor, Andrew Pratt, is seen here baling the grass silage.  Andrew has been helping with many of the contract operations on the farm

Stag Head Field, pictured above, produced 89 large round bales of silage - a very good yield for organically grown grass, receiving no input of fertiliser.

The round bales of silage are transported to be wrapped in an air-tight seal of black polythene, and then stacked, ready for use when the cattle are housed over the autumn/winter period.

MAKING LATE HAY - SEPTEMBER 2007

The normally late cut Upper and Lower Oxeyes and Self Heal meadows were cut much later than anticipated!  Due to a combination of the wet weather and our contractor having to cope with the pressures of a difficult season, the hay was baled in mid September!  It was surprisingly good quality, all things considered, and yielded a very heavy crop!
