Promoting an earth-centred vision for the future
The Sinfield Nature Conservation Trust is a Suffolk-based charity preserving 115 acres of wild-flower meadows, woodland, ancient trees and ponds and promoting nature conservation to benefit all.
This organic farm and County Wildlife Site is a haven for wildlife, supporting over fifty bird species including nightingale, finches, snipe, lesser and greater spotted woodpeckers, kingfishers, barn, tawny and little owls. The farm supports large numbers of dragonflies and butterflies and protects Biodiversity Action Plan endangered species such as bullfinch and great-crested newt.
We host nature-inspired activities and small scale art and craft events. We are raising funds to repair a large historic barn to run fundraising events, exhibitions and workshops all year round.
We retain traditional management practices, including grazing with our herd of rare breed British White cattle, hay cutting and coppicing. Our cattle are important for maintaining and enhancing the grassland habitat. We preserve significant areas of species-rich grassland which is one of Suffolk's most threatened habitats having declined by 97% in the past 50 years (Suffolk County Council figures).
A series of nature trails, open to members in June and to all at the annual June open day, provide guided access.
Labyrinth & Tree Circle
Our project includes plans to create a turf labyrinth and a meditation tree circle. The tree circle will combine native species such as small-leaved lime, english oak and hawthorn to provide a varied source of food and shelter for birds and insects.
Traditional Building
By renovating the traditional buildings at the farm we can provide an ecologically sound, energy efficient centre to advance nature conservation and a holistic awareness of the natural environment. The centre will provide facilities for education and experience in:
Environmental and holistic practices
Traditional crafts
Arts
Our innate heritage, living and working in harmony with the land
The centre will provide a small range of accommodation.
Traditional building materials and methods will be used extensively throughout the site to enhance the historic Suffolk character of White House Farm.
Earth Building
The traditional building techniques will incorporate earth construction using clay from the site. This is an important statement of our commitment to support sustainable resources and bring awareness to the aesthetic and practical benefits of using natural building materials.
The land at White House Farm comprises rare and idyllic countryside, reminiscent of scenes from the past. Visitors comment on the uplifting and inspiring atmosphere and the exceptionally preserved land with beautiful and rare plant species. See The Land for further information and photographs.
